What is pattern? We reckoned maybe shapes, lines and textures repeated in some sort of regular way as surface 'decoration', often man-made but also seen all around in nature. Some drawings were directly from a pile of varied material patterns, ignoring the form and concentrating on the shapes, others were an actual pattern built up from simple repeated shapes... We worked from high contrast photos, studying them UPSIDE DOWN to see just the patches of black and white and not identifying the facial features. Then some tried zooming in to smaller areas to make the image hover on the edge of abstraction while others worked from one or two images sideways to suggest landscape forms. Pop Artists in the 60s used everyday packaging and advertising methods in their images, to produce brash, direct, ironic and witty paintings. Here are our versions... |
