Drawing is like making an expressive gesture with the advantage of permanence - Henri Matisse |

Each person brought their own object and we spent 15 minutes drawing it before passing it round. The aim was to arrive at strange combinations and juxtapositions of totally unrelated objects which then acquire a new meaning in their new context. A different drawing approach was used for each drawing. Also, some responses to the challenge of drawing a landscape 300 million miles away - the very topical landing on Comet 67P. click an image to enlarge... Here we were experimenting with drawing in white on a black surface - the reverse of the normal approach. A variety of methods: drawing with a rubber or scratching with a sharp tool into a dark charcoal area; drawing with white chalk on black paper; scratching with a sharp tool onto a white card or MDF previously covered with black paint; peeling away the top surface of black; making a mid tone by abrading with sandpaper; drawing with a glue stick, then wiping white chalk over it; glueing white paper shapes onto black; drawing with bleach on black-ink-prepared paper...........and then white and black over the top........ Marvellous textures, and the difficulty of holding the scraping tools affected the way we drew. click an image to enlarge... These were intended to 'trick the eye', to purely imitate the subject and create an illusion by working from a few everyday scraps pinned down within a shallow space - by emphasising cast shadows, highlights, edges and textures. click an image to enlarge... |
