The aim was to arrive at strange combinations and juxtapositions of totally unrelated objects which then acquire a new meaning in their new context... This session was all about a medium - ink. The aim was to deconstruct it, find out what exactly it is, what it does and how we can try to encourage it to do what we want! We tried out ideas of flow, surface (varying papers), tools to manipulate it with, adding water and a 'resist' such as candle wax to stop it reaching the paper! These examples were then all presented in a straightforward format. Some of us then applied the ideas to an image of objects in front of us.
The idea here was to make our subject first, then draw it (rather than just drawing something already there.) Or was the whole process actually drawing....? First we made gestural marks on 6 squares of paper, shared them around and tried various arrangements before making them into a collage - then drawing it. Secondly, we painted black and white patterns, shapes, marks, dots etc onto irregular shaped pieces of card, put them together and then drew them. We looked at masses of flowers, with the idea of exploring the shapes, textures and negative spaces - rather than making an image of a recognisable flower. |
