Each pair of students had two postcards of paintings by well-known artists. They turned these upside down and one person did a drawing from the top half of each card, the other did one from the bottom. They were then fitted together and turned the right way up for the rest of the group to try to identify......
Exercise 1 - After drawing some marks in response to the first instruction (3 gestural marks in charcoal) everyone passed on their drawing to the next person in the circle to add theirs for the second instruction (2 squares) and so on until the drawings had circulated twice. Each person then 'resolved' the drawing they had started, to make it their own in any way they wished. Exercise 2 - Upside Down Cards Each pair of students had two postcards of paintings by well-known artists. They turned these upside down and one person did a drawing from the top half of each card, the other did one from the bottom. They were then fitted together and turned the right way up for the rest of the group to try to identify...... We cut bits of card to assemble into four sides and drew the bottles, jugs etc on the front and back of the card to 'suggest' the group of still-life objects in front of us - all in only a little over two hours! We aimed to show objects spilling out of a box, so that the shape of the dark inside of the box defined the image. |
