The second exercise was to paint some odd-shapes pieces of corrugated cardboard with black and white marks, decorations etc. We then arranged these together and drew them, focussing on the black, white and mid-tone shapes rather than identifying each piece of cardboard. But were these still abstract drawings.....?
To start with, we made gestural black marks on 6 squares of paper, re-arranged them several times until an interesting image was found, and then drew it. The second exercise was to paint some odd-shapes pieces of corrugated cardboard with black and white marks, decorations etc. We then arranged these together and drew them, focussing on the black, white and mid-tone shapes rather than identifying each piece of cardboard. But were these still abstract drawings.....? Here we just aimed to do 'big' drawings. Some are just on large paper sheets but others were on huge bits of corrugated cardboard on the floor, with the artist standing over the drawing or walking around it. The materials, the scale and the activity seemed to affect the finished drawings in a special way. The Slideshow shows the real scale of the drawings and the process/activity... We are looking at cast shadows as positive images rather than just 'absence of light.' Some were from objects set up in the studio, others from photos such as the groups of people. Plus two of mine showing the same building after an interval of one hour, as a kind of sundial.' Maybe a good idea to squint to see these at their best...
We were contrasting a variety of coat styles, patterns, textures, pockets, lapels etc - all into a lively composition.
